Melania Trump says she secured ceasefire in Ukrainian city of Oleshky

Melania Trump announced that she had secured a localized ceasefire in Russian-occupied Oleshky, where residents face shortages of food and medication. Her office said the truce is due to begin on October 29 and would enable humanitarian aid deliveries and evacuations of elderly residents; Moscow and Kyiv had not immediately confirmed it. Trump said she had worked with Russian and Ukrainian leaders, with civilian officials from both countries expected to assess needs in the city. Oleshky, on the southern bank of the Dnipro River, has seen its population fall from about 24,000 before the invasion to around 2,000.

Israel: Former Netanyahu ally predicts severe consequences if he is re-elected

Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress since 2007 and a former ally of Benjamin Netanyahu, has warned of the consequences of the Israeli prime minister’s re-election. In an interview published by Haaretz on October 22, 2026, he decried the decline of democracy in Israel, comparing the country’s current state to a “banana republic.” Lauder, who supported Netanyahu during the 1996 election campaign, said he had remained silent for decades and predicted severe losses for Israel if Netanyahu is elected.

Japan donates 16 trucks to patrol East African Community borders

Japan funded the donation of 16 Toyota Hilux 4WD pickups to the East African Community (EAC) to strengthen security along the borders of its eight member states. Handed over to the EAC Secretariat in Arusha, the vehicles were allocated two per country to improve patrols and responses to cross-border threats, including smuggling and human trafficking. The project is implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), following assessments that identified transport shortages at border posts. EAC Secretary General Stephen Patrick Mbundi thanked Japan and urged partner states to deploy the vehicles only in designated border areas.
