Akwa Ibom Chief Judge calls for careful application of AI in Nigeria's justice system

The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom, Justice Ekaete Fabian Obot, called for a systematic application of artificial intelligence in Nigeria's justice system, emphasizing that technology must serve justice, not dominate it. She stressed that AI adoption should be guided by judicial values, ethics, transparency, and independence, and that it should complement judicial discretion rather than replace it. She highlighted AI's potential to enhance efficiency through legal research, case management, transcription, and documentation, with the ultimate goal of improving access to justice, efficiency, and public confidence. During a thanksgiving service, she expressed gratitude for God's mercy in 2026 and faith in continued protection for the judiciary, thanking Governor Umo Eno for supporting the judiciary.
