Albert G. Zeufack: “Targeted and well-coordinated reforms can help businesses create more formal jobs”

The World Bank presented its October 2026 economic report on the transition from business growth to job creation at the National Pedagogical University in Kinshasa on October 29. Albert G. Zeufack, the bank’s country director for several countries including the DRC, described the institution as a “knowledge bank” and said its advice is grounded in data and rigorous analysis. He noted stronger macroeconomic fundamentals but slowing GDP growth, from 9.3% in 2022 to 5.7% in 2025, with about 5.4% forecast for 2026. Although the poverty rate has declined slightly, the absolute number of people living in poverty has risen by about 15 million.

High labour costs and borrowing to keep farming are additional challenges, despite the inputs and training provided through the programme. VCDP officer Hajiya Maimuna Abubakar Ahmed said 262 farmers with disabilities were listed in the programme database, which is being updated to help more beneficiaries receive weather advisories.
