Alberta voters chose to remain part of Canada in the province’s first referendum on separation. With more than one million votes counted, early results showed about 76 percent supported remaining in Canada and 23 percent backed starting a process that could lead to separation. The nonbinding vote was not a direct referendum on independence but could have set the province on a path to a future separation vote. The result is a win for Prime Minister Mark Carney as he seeks to unify Canada amid a trade war with the United States.
