Algeria to Deploy Soldiers to Niger After Unanimous Senate Vote

Algeria’s Senate unanimously approved the deployment of a unit of the National People’s Army to Niger on October 25, 2026, following a decision by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The deployment is linked to an Algerian-Nigerien military cooperation protocol covering counterterrorism, border security and support for Niger’s military capabilities. It follows an August mutiny in Niamey and the subsequent arrival of Algerian fighter jets at the request of Nigerien authorities.
