All candidates to lead the UN face a veto

All seven candidates for UN secretary-general received at least one disapproval vote, equivalent to a veto, from a permanent member of the Security Council in the latest informal poll. For the first time, the five permanent members—the United Kingdom, China, France, Russia and the United States—used colored straws to signal their votes, while the ten elected members continued using plain markers. Costa Rican candidate Rebeca Grynspan, a frontrunner in the previous five polls, received the most encouragement votes but also five disapproval votes, including two from permanent members. US media reported that Washington opposed all seven candidates; US envoy Mike Waltz declined to comment, saying the United States wanted “the best.”
