Aminata Mbaaye Went to Help Her Mother: The Story of a High School Student Who Died on the Way to the Pasture

Aminata Mbaaye, a high school student in her second year, drowned in the river at Ngouye, near Pété, after leaving home around 6 p.m. to bring back her family’s livestock. Witnesses said she waited for a group of young swimmers to leave, then entered the deep water fully clothed after taking off her shoes and necklace. Shortly after leaving home, she had posted a message about fate and Allah on social media, leaving her family perplexed. Fishermen searched the river in their pirogues and recovered her body the following day, 24 hours after she went missing.
