Amnesty International denounces abuses in mining areas controlled by the M23

On September 21, 2026, Amnesty International released a report documenting human rights violations in the mining areas of Rubaya in North Kivu and Lomera in South Kivu, controlled by the M23. The report details summary executions, torture, arbitrary detentions, as well as forced labor and recruitment. Amnesty highlights that the appropriation of mining resources could constitute pillaging, implicating Rwandan officials and M23 leaders.
