Anambra govt to prosecute persons who deny women right to inherit properties

The Anambra government has begun efforts to secure women's right to inherit property in the state, opposing the longstanding discriminatory practice in southeastern Nigeria where women are denied inheritance rights. The Attorney General, Tobechukwu Nweke, has directed police to investigate complaints and prosecute offenders under the 2017 Violence Against Persons Law, which criminalizes denying women inheritance and carries a penalty of up to four years imprisonment. A letter to the police emphasized the importance of thorough investigations and the role of the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Unit in handling such cases.
