A genomics study published in Science reveals that the Neolithic settlement of Catalhoyuk in Turkiye was matrilocal: women remained in their homes while men moved away upon adulthood. This finding contrasts with other European Neolithic communities that were patrilocal and patrilineal. The 9,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered the world's first city, with a population up to 8,000.
