At Geneva, UN Ready to Support Human Rights Impact Assessments for Major Natural Resource Projects in DRC

Awa Dabo, the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated during the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva that the UN Office in DRC is willing to support the implementation of human rights impact assessments for major projects related to natural resources. She highlighted the stark contrast between the DRC’s mineral wealth and the widespread poverty of its population, emphasizing that these resources should benefit the Congolese people rather than foreign or selfish interests. She called for governance reforms, transparency, and anti-corruption measures to strengthen institutions and ensure equitable resource management.
