At least 17 killed in stampede at religious gathering in India

At least 17 people were killed and 25 injured on Saturday in a stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata, in India’s West Bengal state. Police said heavy rain and a large crowd triggered panic after an announcement as people waited outside the pavilion. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said a seven-year-old girl was among the dead and that six bodies had been identified. The government announced compensation of 200,000 rupees for the next of kin of those killed and 50,000 rupees for each injured person.
