At least 17 people, mostly Catholic pilgrims heading to a prayer site, were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the highway to Mombasa, Kenya. The accident occurred in Salama, about 90 km from Nairobi, after midnight, when a truck driver attempted and failed to overtake another truck, leading to a collision with a van carrying pilgrims. The van's driver and 16 passengers, mostly women, died at the scene. President Ruto expressed condolences, and the NTSA launched an investigation into the crash, noting the location is a known dangerous spot on the road.
