Australian MP critically injured after being hit by car in apparent attack

Independent Australian MP Helen Haines, 65, is critically ill in a Melbourne hospital after being struck by a vehicle outside her constituency office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday afternoon. A 43-year-old man was detained at the scene by a passerby and arrested by police; officers found a knife in the car and are investigating whether the incident was intentional. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it appeared to be a deliberate act, but that the motive was not yet known, and condemned violence in a democracy. Police say they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.

Priorities include targeted research into diseases affecting women, such as endometriosis, and getting promising treatments to female patients sooner.
