Australian MP loses both legs in vehicle attack as suspect appears in court

Australian independent MP Helen Haines had both legs amputated after being hit twice by a car outside her electoral office in Wangaratta on Monday. Her husband, Phil Haines, said on Wednesday that she was stable, but doctors had been unable to save her right leg. Suspect Brendan Nugent, 43, appeared in court and was charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing injury and harming a public official, as well as cannabis offences. Police are still investigating the motive, and federal police commissioner Krissy Barrett said there had been no intelligence indicating a threat to Haines.
