Awka Anglican Diocese Crisis Deepens as Chancellor Demands N5 Billion in Damages

Awka Anglican Diocese Chancellor B. E. Nwofor is demanding N5 billion in damages from Aguata Bishop Samuel Ezeofor after Ezeofor removed him from office. Ezeofor was appointed administrator of Awka Diocese by Primate Henry Ndukuba following the suspension of Archbishop Alexander Ibezim, who was directed to take six months’ leave during an investigation. Nwofor disputes the appointment and Ezeofor’s authority to dismiss him, saying the diocese’s 2023 constitution does not provide for a supervising bishop. He demands withdrawal of the removal letter, a public apology and payment, or he will sue; Ezeofor’s appointment is also being challenged in the Anambra State High Court.
