Tinubu travels to Mecca to pray for Nigeria

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is travelling to Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah and pray for Nigeria’s peace, unity and stability, his spokesman Bayo Onanuga said. Media aide Olusegun Dada dismissed speculation that the trip is for medical checks, saying Tinubu also intends to place his re-election bid in God’s hands. The visit comes months before elections scheduled for January, with widespread insecurity a major campaign issue. Tinubu last performed Umrah in 2022, before the APC presidential primary.

Fighting rages near Yemen’s Taiz as UN urges humanitarian access

Fighting between Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces and the Houthis has escalated on several fronts south of Taiz, including Al-Aqroudh, Al-Masrakh and Al-Rahn village. Houthi-affiliated media reported four air strikes on Mocha and its Red Sea port, while government forces said they repelled attacks at Al-Aqroud and were trying to break the area’s siege. Government forces spokesman Majid al-Nazili said they had carried out 749 operations in 24 hours, killing or injuring 239 militants and destroying 117 vehicles. Flights resumed at Aden International Airport after services were suspended on Wednesday following reports of a missile landing near an adjacent camp.

Why is Russia sending fighter jets and air defences to Ethiopia?

Ethiopia has received 12 Russian Su-35 fighter jets and plans to acquire four S-400 air defence batteries, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced in Moscow during the Russia-Africa Summit. The systems will strengthen Ethiopia’s armed forces as the country faces conflict in Tigray and tensions with Eritrea. Experts say the deal extends decades of military cooperation, giving Moscow arms revenue and diplomatic influence in the Horn of Africa. The S-400s could help counter conventional aerial threats, including Eritrean aircraft and drones.
