Banel Sow Attempts Self-Harm After Mother Opposes Marriage to Security Agent

Banel Sow, an 18-year-old high school student from Galoya in Podor, opposed her mother’s refusal to allow her marriage to T. M. Sy, a security agent from Pété. After learning that her lover married someone else, she attempted to end her life by pouring boiling water on herself, requiring medical evacuation. She had previously asked the police to intervene and persuade her mother to accept the marriage, but her pleas were ignored.
