The BBC will close its BBC Three and BBC Scotland television channels in the spring, along with Radio 4 Extra, as part of a two-year plan to save £500m. BBC Three and BBC Scotland will become online-only, with content available on platforms including iPlayer, while Radio 4 Extra programmes will move to BBC Sounds. Director-general Matt Brittin said the decisions were difficult but necessary amid cost pressures and changing audience habits. BBC Scotland’s nightly news programme Reporting Scotland: News at Seven will end when the linear channel closes and will not move to iPlayer.
