Benin: Between Strict Penalties and Awareness, the State Must Regulate Sanitation Structures

Firefighter interventions in Bohicon, Natitingou, Toffo and Porto-Novo have exposed the dangers posed by uncovered septic tanks, abandoned wells and poorly built latrines. Incidents cited include the rescue of a two-year-old girl in Avogbanan, a motorcyclist who fell into a pit in Houègbo, and a woman rescued from a toilet in Porto-Novo. Recurring accidents nevertheless point to failures in compliance and oversight, underscoring the need for stronger prevention and enforcement.
