Benin: Cotonou bans markets, demonstrations, and drinking establishments on election day

The Cotonou municipality announced restrictions for the presidential election on April 12, 2026, banning public demonstrations, closing markets, and suspending the activities of drinking establishments from 6 AM to 8 PM. These measures aim to prevent public disorder and ensure a conducive environment for voting. Nearly eight million voters are expected to elect the successor of President Patrice Talon, with Paul Hounkpè and Romuald Wadagni as the main candidates.
