Benin: Government explains expropriations in Togbin Daho

On October 24, Beninese government spokesperson Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji addressed expropriations and evictions linked to the Route des Pêches project in Togbin Daho, in the commune of Abomey-Calavi. He said occupation of the banks blocks the water’s natural course and increases flood risk, while protected mangroves have already delayed other projects. The government plans to relocate residents and buy properties from those whose ownership is legally recognized, then develop the banks and make the waterway navigable as far as Ouidah. Requests from representatives of affected residents have been recorded and forwarded to the authorities.
