On July 13, 2026, Benin's National Assembly unanimously adopted the new environmental law n°2026-15, replacing the 1999 framework law. Presented by Justice Minister Yvon Détchénou, the 138-article law strengthens penalties for polluters with fines up to 10 billion FCFA and prison terms up to 20 years. It also integrates international standards and expands the role of local authorities, private sector, and civil society.
