Benin: Red lights, helmets, phones... strengthened road controls

Since September 21, 2026, strengthened road controls have been implemented in several cities in Benin, including Cotonou, Abomey-Calavi, and Porto-Novo. The checks focus on compliance with traffic lights, helmet use, and seatbelt usage. Users who run a red light risk having their vehicle immobilized. In April 2024, a fine of 5,000 CFA francs was established for not wearing a helmet.
