Romuald Wadagni, Benin's Finance Minister, has won the presidency with over 94% of the vote, according to provisional results. His main opponent, Paul Hounkpè, conceded the election while votes were still being counted. Wadagni was chosen by outgoing President Patrice Talon, who was barred from running again after two terms. Voter turnout was 58.75%, and the new president will need to address worsening insecurity and chronic poverty in the country.
