A dispute between Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd and the Kenyan government has put a Sh3.62 billion expansion of the soda ash plant in doubt, which aimed to triple annual production. Announced in October 2024, the project was expected to raise output to one million tonnes and add a 10-megawatt solar plant. Less than two years after the announcement, Tata is facing a shutdown of its mining operations and a Sh17.45 billion claim by Kajiado County.
