Nearly 159 million Brazilian voters are due to go to the polls on October 25 to choose between incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Flávio Bolsonaro won 47% of the vote in the first round, compared with Lula’s 45%, and polls point to a close race. The result could affect relations between Brasília and Washington, as Donald Trump is an ally of the Bolsonaro family. The winner will lead Latin America’s largest economy, home to about 214 million people, for four years.
