Brazilian amputates his own foot to defraud insurance companies and is convicted

Vanderley dos Santos Gomes, an employee of the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia, was definitively convicted of fraud after orchestrating the amputation of his own foot in 2019 to claim insurance payouts of up to 1.5 million reais (about £220,000). He had taken out four insurance policies between June and July 2019, then staged a kidnapping and machete attack. The Bahia court rejected his story and sentenced him to less than four years in prison, commuted to community service and a fine of five minimum wages.
