Cameroonian lawyer Amédée Dimitri Touko Tom says the opposition’s historic mistake was giving the dictatorship the benefit of the doubt. In his analysis, he describes 93-year-old Paul Biya as nearing the end of his life and says two factions around him are fighting over succession. He alleges that one faction is preparing a military coup while the other is seeking to install a vice-president through an “institutional heist.” He criticizes the opposition for standing by and questions whether political alternation in Cameroon is anything more than an illusion.
