Cameroon: What Lies Behind the Suspension of Issa Tchiroma’s Party

The MINAT has suspended Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s FSNC party for three months, a year before legislative elections, deepening divisions within the opposition and raising concerns that the party could be permanently sidelined. The decision comes amid political tension following the 12 October 2025 presidential election, in which Paul Biya won 53.66% of the vote against Tchiroma’s 35.19%. Protests followed the election and hundreds of people were arrested. On 8 October 2026, the Yaoundé Military Tribunal convicted 66 people.

He wants the ministry to identify the road sections and planned work, contractors, funding arrangements, procurement approvals and completion timelines, with a breakdown of funds approved, released and paid. Ugolor also asked whether the damaged Kira section in Rivers State is covered and how the repairs relate to existing contracts and the planned reconstruction of about 400 kilometres between Edo and Cross River states. He called for publication of drainage, flood-risk and geotechnical assessments, alongside information on safety, community consultation and compensation.
