Gambia Central Bank’s Planned Sack Affects 57 Nigerians, NiDCOM Protests

Nigeria’s diaspora commission, NiDCOM, is protesting a September 16 directive by the Central Bank of The Gambia requiring banks to replace all non-Gambian employees by December 31, 2026. Patrick Tsongo, an occasional spokesperson for the associations and unions, cited controls and threats from services including the DGI and DGRAD. The traders are calling on authorities to intervene and provide concrete answers to their demands.

A workshop opened in Lomé on October 29, 2026, chaired by Education Minister Mama Omorou, to secure institutional validation of five certification and assessment tools. Supported by organizations including GIZ, the OIF and FNAFPP, the reform aims to harmonize training and help employers recognize participants’ skills. In May 2026, the government approved a strategic framework for the courses through 2035; the initiative comes as 46% of Togolese aged 18 to 35 surveyed by Afrobarometer said they were unemployed and seeking work.
