Cancer: one in eight cases linked to bacteria, thousands of preventable cases – La Nouvelle Tribune

A study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published in The Lancet Oncology reports that 2.3 million new cancer cases in 2024 were linked to preventable infections, accounting for 12% of all new cases worldwide. The main agents are Helicobacter pylori, HPV, hepatitis B and C, and Epstein-Barr virus, with H. pylori leading. The geographic distribution shows a high concentration in East Asia and in low- and middle-income regions, which account for 77% of infection-related cancers.
