Cape Town animal welfare teams withdraw after alleged intimidation during Guy Fawkes

Animal welfare teams halted patrols in parts of Cape Town after allegedly being intimidated by armed men during Guy Fawkes celebrations. The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa reported incidents in Mitchells Plain, while the Cape of Good Hope SPCA received 81 calls on Thursday night, 59% more than the previous year; at least five animals needed urgent veterinary care. In Delft, a dog named Max died after being impaled on a gate while trying to escape fireworks. Vehicles were also stoned, and passers-by were reportedly targeted with paint and other substances.
