CATA chairperson shot at Nyanga taxi rank as fragile Cape Town taxi truce faces new test

The 44-year-old chairperson of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) was shot and wounded at Nyanga Terminus in Cape Town at about 9am on Thursday. Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said the victim had a gunshot wound to the upper body and was taken to hospital; police opened an attempted murder case, and no arrests have been made. The attack, which police believe was taxi-related, came three days after CATA and CODETA agreed to a seven-day truce and independent mediation following weeks of deadly violence over disputed routes.

Kenyan preacher sentenced to 200 years in prison over murders of 191 people

Self-proclaimed preacher Paul Mackenzie was sentenced Friday to 200 years in prison for the murder of 191 people, including 190 children, in the Shakahola Forest cult near Malindi. The court imposed 100 years for homicide and 100 years for charges related to the starvation of followers, whom he allegedly urged to fast to “meet Jesus”; his 28 co-accused also received lengthy sentences. The judge described the suffering endured by children, while Francis Wanje, who lost two grandchildren, blamed authorities for failing to act sooner. Mackenzie plans to appeal and faces other trials; the case, which Kenya’s human rights commission says killed 429 people, has renewed calls for tighter regulation of religious organisations.

C. T. Sonko, a 27-year-old restaurateur from Zac-Mbao, and M. Fall, a 22-year-old tailor from Médina-Gounass, have been remanded in custody after an altercation in Sam-Notaire, where they had arranged to meet through Snapchat on November 2. A. L. Mbaye, a local shopkeeper, says Fall told him that Sonko was pursuing a romantic relationship and sexual relations with him, and Mbaye then took both men to the Guédiawaye central police station. Mbaye says he found an envelope containing 14 condoms, pills and lubricant in Sonko’s bag. Sonko acknowledges the case concerns an accusation of homosexuality but denies engaging in such acts; both men are due before the Pikine-Guédiawaye flagrante delicto court on Monday.
