Charcoal becomes the primary source of domestic energy in Beni

The consumption of charcoal, commonly referred to as 'braise', has become essential for many households and businesses in Beni, despite rising prices. A sack of charcoal currently sells for around 135,000 FC (approximately 58 USD), with some restaurants consuming one every two days. This high demand puts pressure on the forests of North Kivu, leading to a gradual disappearance of forest cover. This report is the first in a series on the production of charcoal and its environmental consequences.
