Child among three killed off French coast in Channel crossing attempt

Three people, including a child, died off the coast of France while attempting to cross the English Channel to the UK, French authorities said. The maritime police received a distress call from an inflatable dinghy carrying 105 people that encountered trouble in calm seas off Wissant. All passengers requested rescue and were taken into care; the dinghy did not sink. Over 41,000 migrants attempted the crossing in 2025, with at least 29 deaths reported last year, highlighting a migration crisis.
