China’s Political Elite Gather for Talks on Communist Party Discipline

About 300 members of the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee began a four-day, closed-door meeting on Monday to discuss strengthening party discipline. Xi Jinping is seeking greater loyalty from officials and continuing a 14-year anticorruption campaign that has purged thousands of cadres. The fifth plenum is also being watched for clues about China’s political direction and future leadership, as Xi is widely expected to seek a fourth five-year term as party leader.

African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore said he would not join the opposition coalition led by Atiku Abubakar to remove President Bola Tinubu. In an interview on the Deep Insight podcast on Monday, he said coalition members were no different from Tinubu and had helped destroy Nigeria.
