Cholera cases surge in Yemen as conflict displaces over 200,000 people

The escalation of conflict in Yemen since August 6 has displaced over 200,000 people across 10 governorates, leading to a sharp rise in cholera cases, which have tripled in three weeks to 8,034 suspected cases this year. The southwestern regions of Abyan, Lahj, Al-Dhale’e, Taiz, and Aden account for 92% of reported cases, with remote displacement camps also affected. Vaccination coverage remains critically low at around 45%, increasing the risk of outbreaks of preventable diseases like cholera and measles, while health facilities are overwhelmed, with 500 lacking partner support. WHO is assisting the health ministry with response teams, treatment centers, and supplies, but additional funding is urgently needed to control outbreaks and support displaced communities.
