Cholera Crisis: Nigeria among seven worst-hit nations as global deaths surge

In 2025, cholera-related deaths increased by 30% worldwide despite a decline in reported cases, according to the WHO. Seven countries, including Nigeria, accounted for about 90% of all reported cases and deaths, with Africa experiencing a 34% rise in cases and a 58% increase in deaths compared to 2024. The WHO emphasizes that many deaths could be prevented with prompt medical treatment and improved access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. Over 20% of deaths occurred outside health facilities, and oral cholera vaccine production expanded significantly to about 80 million doses in 2025.
