City, Western Cape government ordered to report on Tafelberg housing plans
The South African Constitutional Court ruled that the 2015 sale of the Tafelberg site in Sea Point was unlawful due to lack of consultation with the Minister of Human Settlements and insufficient public participation. The City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government are required to submit reports to the High Court by October 2, 2026, regarding their handling of the site. Activists Ndifuna Ukwazi and Reclaim the City challenged the sale, claiming it perpetuated spatial apartheid and advocating for social housing instead. Ndifuna Ukwazi's report states that 200 to 250 social housing units could be built, though heritage concerns have reduced the projected yield to 200 units.
