Climate Change and Malaria Transmission: Warning Issued at the World Health Summit in Berlin

At the World Health Summit in Berlin, speakers warned that climate change can affect malaria transmission and disrupt prevention efforts. During a roundtable at the Wellcome Trust organized by Grand Challenges Canada, Global Health Advocates, Results Canada, WACI Health and ISA, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane described how floods, drought and infrastructure damage are making healthcare harder to access in Ghana. He urged governments to prioritize prevention over emergency spending, while COPEMA’s participation highlighted parliamentarians’ role in incorporating climate resilience into health budgets, legislation and national priorities. Extreme weather can damage roads and health facilities, interrupting prevention campaigns and access to diagnosis and treatment.
