Congo-Brazzaville: Oil exploitation accused of polluting Kouilou

Civil society organizations in Congo-Brazzaville are raising concerns about pollution caused by oil exploitation in the Kouilou department. Farmers are reporting decreased yields in cassava fields and damage to fruit trees. An investigation by the Justice and Peace Commission found that soils, water, and air are contaminated with hydrocarbons above WHO thresholds. The Commission is calling for strict enforcement of the gas flaring ban and the establishment of a compensation fund for affected populations.
