Congo-Kinshasa: Ebola Outbreak Spreads in DR Congo As Misinformation Hampers Response

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading, with 676 confirmed infections and 136 deaths as of June 12, 2026. Misinformation, especially via social media, is hampering the response: nearly one in three people in Ituri province does not believe Ebola is real. The WHO has declared an international health emergency, and Africa CDC reports that 27 health zones are affected, up from three at the start. Neighboring Uganda has recorded 19 cases, including two deaths, almost all Congolese nationals.
