Cost of living protests hit Belgium, Italy, Portugal and France

Hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated on Saturday in Belgium, France, Italy and Portugal over the rising cost of living. More than 550,000 people joined protests in France during an especially turbulent day. Police used tear gas and water cannon in Brussels and Liege, while demonstrators threw stones and clashed with officers in Milan and Bologna. In Lisbon, tens of thousands protested low wages and the housing crisis, with house prices in Portugal having more than doubled since 2017.
