Côte d’Ivoire: Chapeaux Rouges President Cahié Kunta Sentenced to Three Months in Prison

On November 5, 2026, the Abidjan-Plateau court sentenced Cahié Kakou Guy Joël, known as Cahié Kunta, to three months in prison for disturbing public order, making insults, and spreading false information online. The Chapeaux Rouges president must also pay a 100,000 CFA franc fine and 500,000 CFA francs in damages to a baker who filed a complaint. Prosecutors had sought a 12-month prison term; Kunta’s lawyer called the sentence severe and is considering an appeal within the 20-day deadline. At the hearing, Kunta apologized, saying that although his cause was legitimate, his methods may not have been appropriate.
