Court judgment on Election Timetable threat to 2027 Polls - INEC

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed it has filed appeals against two Federal High Court judgments that challenged aspects of its timetable for the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan SAN stated that the activities in the timetable are interrelated operational processes that cannot be arbitrarily isolated without disrupting the entire electoral calendar. The first judgment on May 20, 2026 in Youth Party vs INEC questioned timelines, while the second on May 26, 2026 in SDP vs INEC nullified timelines for candidate nomination and substitution. INEC noted that the court itself acknowledged that an election timetable without dates for primaries would lead to chaos.
