Crimes against journalists: impunity persists, UNESCO warns

More than 1,700 journalists were killed worldwide between 2006 and 2024, and nine in ten of those murders resulted in no judicial conviction, according to UNESCO’s Observatory of Killed Journalists. In its report, “Threats are evolving. Impunity persists,” published on Monday ahead of the November 2 international day, UNESCO warns that attacks and harassment against journalists remain largely unpunished. The organization says impunity helps conceal human rights violations, corruption and other crimes. The Middle East is the world’s most dangerous region for journalists, with 97 killed over the past two years, many amid the Gaza war; Ukraine, Somalia and Sudan are also among the deadliest countries for the press.
