Crisis in eastern DR Congo: Huang Xia identifies four priorities to bridge the gap between diplomatic progress and realities on the ground for lasting peace

At a UN Security Council session on the Great Lakes region, Special Envoy Huang Xia pointed to a marked gap between diplomatic progress and continuing hostilities in eastern DR Congo. He called for a more substantial role for the African Union in guiding negotiations and helping implement commitments. He also urged more inclusive peace processes, giving women real influence and involving civil society and young people at every stage. Finally, he stressed the need to continue de-escalation efforts and confidence-building measures among leaders, countries and communities.
