Cross River Assembly Passes State Police Bill

On Tuesday, all 22 lawmakers present in the Cross River State House of Assembly voted for the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which seeks to establish a constitutional framework for state police services in Nigeria. The bill has 26 clauses and proposes 25 amendments to the Constitution. Assembly Speaker Elvert Ayambem and other lawmakers backed policing closer to local communities while stressing the need for the rule of law, accountability and coordination with federal security agencies. The bill must complete the constitutionally prescribed amendment process before the proposed changes can take effect nationally.
