Curfews contributed to a calm night in France after riots, says PM Lecornu

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said targeted curfews helped keep the night calm after a weekend of riots and looting across France. Restrictions were imposed in parts of Paris, including around Place de la République and Les Halles, as well as in Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon and Lille. Lecornu thanked police and gendarmes and said local authorities would decide on the ground where curfews would be needed on Tuesday night. More than 2,500 people have been arrested since the unrest began, about 1,000 police officers have been injured, and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez admitted police had lost control in some cities.

After UN success, Togo aims to translate the Equal Earth map into African languages

After the UN General Assembly adopted the “Correct the Map” resolution on September 4, 2026, with 164 votes in favor, one against and six abstentions, Togo is moving ahead with translations of the Equal Earth map into African languages. The Foreign Affairs Ministry is inviting translators, linguists, teachers, researchers and associations to translate geographic names, the map legend and an educational note, and to provide a glossary explaining their terminology. Target languages include Hausa, Yoruba, Wolof, Lingala, Zulu, Malagasy, Ewe, Kabiye and Kotokoli; a Kiswahili translation is already underway. The translations will be released free of charge under an open license, with selected teams announced on January 15, 2027, and work due by the end of February.

The center noted that Cosmos-series satellites had approached the same satellite in May, with Cosmos 2609 coming within 2.5 kilometers. In 2022, Russian Foreign Ministry official Konstantin Vorontsov warned that quasi-civilian infrastructure could become a legitimate target for retaliation.
